On Sunday, at 0636 hours, deputies Terry Bale and Charles Kaminer responded to the listed location in reference to a subject being shot.
Upon arrival, the witness, Wendy Burke, met us in the yard and stated that the victim, Lauren Weldon, shot her boyfriend, suspect Robert Shipley. Upon entering the home, deputies found Robert Shipley lying on the back bedroom floor with a gunshot wound to the head. Lauren Weldon was applying pressure to the wound and was crying that she shot him because he kept beating her.
Lauren was wearing a small t shirt and panties on our arrival, and we could clearly see red marks and welts on her side. She stated Robert was hitting her all over her body with his hands, struck her several times with a belt, and put his finger inside her mouth (like a fishhook) and pulled her around the room.
She stated she told him to stay away from her or she was going to shoot him. She stated he walked out of the room for a few minutes, and when he returned, he became irate that she had a gun.
At that time, she stated she fired the .40 caliber handgun one time, causing a round to strike Robert in the forehead. At that point, she began to try to help him,and she called 911.
From the police report:
“Afterwards , I spoke to the witness (Wendy Burke) and she stated she had arrived at the residence about 30 minutes prior to the shooting. She stated that she and Robert were supposed to go to North Carolina to pick up car parts, but upon her arrival, she heard lots of arguing. Robert came to the front porch several times, where she told him to stay outside and cool off. He refused and continued to go back and forth into the residence. The third time he went in is when she heard the gunshot. At that point she ran inside and saw that Robert had been shot.
Engine Company #9 and EMS responded to the scene shortly thereafter. The suspect was transported to GRU. Violent Crimes Investigators Hampton 714 and Yates 707 also responded immediately. Crime Scene Investigator Gordon 845 also came to the scene. The incident was turned over to him.”
