In a prepared statement released this morning to the media, former mayoral candidate Helen Blocker-Adams announced that she has officially withdrawn from the mayor’s race.
Below is Blocker-Adams’ statement to the public and the media:
“After five days of seclusion away from television, print and radio news, social media, and the public I have had time to reflect on the series of events that have occurred. Over the past week, I have come to the realization that I need to focus on God, those I have hurt and me. This past week has been the worst in my life and as horrible and painful as it was it showed me in the past twenty years I have been too prideful, too independent, and in denial about my personal finances.
“I was not transparent with my team and that was one thing that was an important part of my platform – transparency in government. I realized looking back, that for the first time two years ago, I started taking care of my physical self and the world can see that. Now it’s time to work on the mental part and the spiritual part of myself. I will make right by every debt I have incurred, I will work to mend the trust that I have lost and rebuild the relationships that were damaged.
“I have just completed the paperwork at the courthouse to officially withdraw from the mayors race. At 3 a.m. Sunday morning I awoke, and knew that I could not be an effective mayor. Even if I stayed in the race and won or was in the runoff, they would continue to work toward running my name in the ground and I don’t want that for my family. My intention was to allow the voters the opportunity to let their vote count. We researched last night and it would again cost the taxpayers in Augusta Richmond County money to have my name withdrawn after the race. I don’t want to risk costing the taxpayers dollars because of me.
“I am grateful for the overwhelming love and support that I have received during the course of this campaign and my life. I appreciate every single vote that may have already been cast for me, and now it is time to do what is best for the city I love, Augusta, Georgia.
“I have completed the notarized affidavit at the courthouse to officially withdraw from the mayors race.”
