The gossip around town is that Augusta National is beginning work on two tunnels underneath Washington Road, which will connect the golf course to the 30 acres of land behind the Washington Square Shopping Center they purchased for $946,000 a number of years ago.
Large mounds of dirt are piled up as the 60” water line from the canal pumping station to Daniel Village is rerouted to accommodate the newest Augusta National project.
Word is the National is getting closer to building a “Corporate Village” across Washington Road from the course on the former apartment complex land.
Millions of dollars will be spent on just the tunnels, so one can only imagine where they will lead.
The plan is for Augusta National to create a completely self-contained and highly refined experience for Masters Week that would include luxury accommodations and the best in fine dining without patrons having to even leave Augusta National’s property.
It is said that the National looked at the cost of swinging Washington Road over, or even closing the busy thoroughfare down entirely while the tunnels were constructed. Ultimately tunneling under won out.
As workers use GPS to plot the land for this year’s parking, the large slope of land goes on for as far as the eye can see.
Insiders wonder how long before the Augusta National owns every piece of their Masters pie.
