Dear Suzanne:
I’ve been reading your column for a while now and I’ve always wanted to ask you about something. Why do women love shoes? I know you’ve talked about them before, but I don’t understand. My wife keeps buying more and more of them and my daughter is starting to want them and still — I don’t understand. Please, shed some light on the love of shoes that women seem to have.
— Confused About the Shoes
Dear Confused:
I am a shoe fanatic. I love them and I am going to explain why I love them. I can’t guarantee this is why all women love shoes, but I don’t really think there’s all that much different about me than other females.
Very quickly, let me just say that there is a small group of women who like things that are popular or trendy. This means that some women like shoes only because they think they are supposed to. Women that fall into this category can either get over their infatuation by becoming comfortable with their own tastes, or they will actually start to like shoes and love them forever.
That being said, here’s why I love shoes. They are the perfect way to express your mood. When I get dressed, I am often confined by what I wear — business clothes on some days, jeans or relaxed wear on others. But my shoes I can always match to my mood.
I often wear stilettos with designer jeans because they make me feel tall, long-legged and sexy. When I wear capris and I’m feeling flirty, I generally wear flip-flops with some sort of flower or something shiny. Shoes are such an extension of personality that I have come to believe they are the most important article of clothing (accessory, whatever) that I put on each day.
And to quote the fabulous movie (based on the excellent book) “In Her Shoes,” the reason that shoes are so great is because “They always fit.” What that means is that if a woman gains or loses weight, or her favorite dress is too snug or hangs like a potato sack — her gorgeous pumps are always a perfect fit.
Looks like diamonds may have a run for their money in the best friend department. Of course, I’m just waiting for the day I can afford to have them grace my feet! |
