James Brown is watching us

BY TOM GRANT

AUGUSTA, GA. - The Greater Augusta Arts Council has been working to get the new James Brown statue camera functional for Masters Week.

However, they’re still struggling with a few technical issues, said Arts Council Executive Director Brenda Durant.

The camera is in place, thanks to a grant obtained by the Arts Council. A group of engineers from Project Management International and Morris Communications have helped with the project.

The idea is that visitors to the James Brown statue on Broad Street across from the Augusta Common can use a cell phone to trigger a camera at the statue, then download the photo from the Arts Council Web site (augustaarts.com).

The camera is up, but the radio signal for operating the camera is suffering from interference because of the trees in the area. Durant says they hope to resolve that with some antenna adjustments and have the camera operational as soon as possible.
She’ll make a presentation about the James Brown camera during the Augusta Commission meeting on Tuesday.

The camera is actually a security camera that’s always on. When someone calls the special number, it triggers the security camera to take a five-second shot.

That shot is then sent to some software provided by Morris that isolates a single image from that five-second segment. Durant said the image is then posted on the Arts Council site where people can download it or e-mail it.

Durant says the James Brown camera will undoubtedly be available during the James Brown birthday party and Payback concert on the first weekend in May, when she expects it to get some heavy use.

If it’s successful, the Arts Council may be able to use similar technology at other sites in Augusta, such as the Augusta Canal and Woodrow Wilson home. And because Billy Payne has expressed his interest in spreading the gospel of golf, perhaps someone will suggest he install one near the Augusta National sign.
