I was surprised when I first received this CD. Aldo Leopardi is dentist who plays rock and roll. My immediate impression was that this CD probably wouldn’t sound good — but I am surprised.
This is a solid rock and roll album. The sounds on this CD give a nod to the classic rock and ’80s hair bands of yesteryear. The overall sound of the CD is a blend of Queensryche, Ted Nugent, KISS, AC/DC, and the Cult, with vocals similar to Michael Hutchins of INXS. The song “Reckless Dreams” sounds very Queensryche-inspired. But it also has driving lead guitars and vocal harmonies ala KISS. The song “Walls” has Bowie-esqe vocals with a neat vintage Echoplex-type of vocal effect. I like the guitar chord change choices in this song. This music doesn’t sound like alternative or contemporary pop, but leans more toward classic rock.
The song called “Always Be” starts off acoustically, similar to an Ozzy tune, with bits of percussion instruments thrown in for good measure. I hear a Vibra Slap (a percussion instrument with a sound similar to a snake’s rattle used in lots of ’70s movie soundtracks). This is definitely an acoustic hard rock power ballad.
“Nowhere to Run” opens with a Grand Funk Railroad type of cowbell. It features multi-tracked, layered vocals and good electric guitar sounds with doubling, harmonizing and the standard crunchy Marshall-amp-turned-up-to-10 sound. This song would be a good candidate for a new movie soundtrack.
If your music forte is hard rock and ’80s hair bands, Aldo Leopardi’s self-titled, debut “Aldo Leopardi” is for you. It’s available for purchase at Aldoleopardimusic.com. |
