AUGUSTA, GA - “Get Free”: It’s fresh, feel-good, alternative rock. Whether riding down a lonely highway “Thelma & Louise” style or with others on a trip to the nightclub, Devi’s debut serves as the perfect backdrop. The group from Hoboken, N.J., lead by singer/songwriter and head guitarist Debra (who has a tone similar to Sheryl Crow), seeks to shake your soul with thoughtful and melodic compositions with a rough edge.
“When It Comes Down” is a dramatic, alternative piece that hints at your favorite mainstream rock group, with a bit of soul-infused blues. It’s a haunting song inclusive of an impressive emotional guitar solo. “Howl at the Moon” depends on wanting with a tinge of animalistic character as she sings, “I’m gonna howl at the moon until you hear me.”
“Get Free” sounds similar to Stone Temple Pilot’s “Creep,” and borrows a bit on the sullen story of a past life and the strength to move on… maybe one more than the other, but you get the picture. We get a bit revved up with the adoration-filled, quick-tempoed “All I Need.” Devi even takes a chance to remake Neil Young’s “The Needle and the Damage Done” where the results would deserve an honorable nod from the legend. All in all, Devi impresses with a great debut, and it’s bound to receive numerous plays in your stereo.
