Cult classic

After a couple of decades and more than 300 performances, the role of Frank N. Furter comes naturally to Misfit director

BY ALICE WYNN

AUGUSTA, GA – This weekend, the Misfit Theatre Group camps it up for the ultimate Halloween show, the mother of all cult movies: “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”

“‘Rocky Horror’ has been something that’s been part of my life… it’s the show that started Misfit Theatre Group,” director Robert Seawell said.

Performing “Rocky Horror” in some form or other since he was 11 years old, Seawell plays the “sweet transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania” Dr. Frank N. Furter, the part made famous in the film by Tim Curry.

But it was the role of Riff Raff, Frank’s hunchbacked servant, that was his first love. In fact, years ago, the kid in the black pants and jacket sporting a cheap blonde wig at the midnight showings of “Rocky Horror” at the Regency Mall theater was Seawell.

He has also played Magenta, maid to Frank and sister of Riff Raff, but it’s Frank N. Furter that he feels is like second nature to him.

“That’s the role I’ve been playing forever,” he said, estimating he has played Frank “at least” 300 times.

“I’m excited to be Frank,” he said. “Frank, even though he’s mean at times and can be bitchy, you still love him because he’s fun.”

Brad Majors and Janet Weiss, the couple who stumble upon Frank N. Furter’s castle, are played by Matt Lindsey and Buffy Duncan, who have been performing“Rocky Horror” with Seawell since it became an annual event back in 2002.

“I’ve got a really good cast; I feel really blessed,” Seawell said.

Jezibell Anat is Magenta, and local independent film actor Christopher Bowman is Riff Raff. Vera Evans plays groupie Columbia.

“She’s always wanted the part; this is her big year. She got the part finally. She’s really excited about it,” he said.

Nearly 35 years after its release, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” still remains a fan favorite.

“It’s a timeless movie, it’s reached cult status; it’s the biggest cult movie of all time and the longest-running film in movie theaters. It’s still running today,” Seawell said of the appeal. “I think it’s so bizarre and so weird. The first time you watch it, it’s like, ‘What am I watching?” but really and truly I have to say I can’t just sit down and watch the movie after all these years.

"It’s just a crazy movie and it’s really just a movie… you can get away from the everyday norm and just let yourself go. I think people need that sort of thing, they need an outlet, and ‘Rocky Horror’ for many people, I think is an outlet; it’s that show they can go to and just basically like Frank says in the movie, give yourself over to absolute pleasure, you can go and just let yourself loose.”

Rather than perform the Broadway show like they have done in the past, this production is a faithful adaptation of the film. Plus, they’ve added a scene or two left on the cutting-room floor.

“When you look on the screen and see Tim Curry turn to the right, and you see his sideburns and all that, you’ll see mine,” he said, adding that the makeup and costumes are exact replicas. “I like every little detail to be right.”

The show opens on Thursday night at Club Argos, but they will perform it on Friday night at The Loft and Saturday night at The Filling Station, with all shows beginning at 11 p.m. and hosted by another of Seawell’s alter egos, Claire Storm.

While squirt guns are not allowed, audience members are encouraged to bring props like confetti, bubbles, flashlights, newspapers, noisemakers and party hats.

“Our shows are fully interactive. We like the audience to feel like they’re in the show,” Seawell said. “Of course fishnets and garter belts are optional.”
