AUGUSTA, GA - “We put the ‘un’ in unconventional theater,” said Robert Seawell, founder of the Misfit Theatre Group.

The troupe, which began in 2002, also performs under the name Erotic Nightmares, used primarily for the annual “Rocky Horror Show” tribute held on Halloween. But for their latest production, “Wicked,” much like the spirit of “Rocky Horror,” audience participation is all part of the fun.

“Every show we do, we make the audience feel like they’re part of it,” Seawell said.

“Wicked,” for those that don’t know, is the truth behind “The Wizard of Oz,” giving insight and revealing details that the more familiar story doesn’t, including the mystery behind those famous ruby slippers.

“‘The Wizard of Oz’ is a glitch,” he said about the story. Seawell, who also directs, stars as Elphaba, the beautiful girl with green skin who eventually becomes known as The Wicked Witch of the West.

“‘Wicked’ is all about her,” Seawell said. Her green skin is a source of much discrimination, and that aspect is a factor that Seawell found appealing about the show.

Co-starring with Seawell is Alisa Farrington as Galinda, later Glinda the Good Witch, whom Seawell describes as a “goody two shoes.” Jezebelle Anat plays the role of Madame Morrible, a villain in the story. “She makes the Wicked Witch look friendly,” he said.

Matt Lindsey, also assistant director, is Fiyero, who later becomes the Scarecrow, torn between both Galinda and Elphaba. Emily Hammond is Nessarose, Elphaba’s sister.

A small group such at the Misfit Theatre Group relies on donations for support, sometimes even reaching into their own pockets. But this time around, thanks to Dermagraphic Productions and 8th Street Tobacco, the show can go on.

“We want to give an incredible show,” Seawell said.

You can bet your ruby slippers on that one.
