AUGUSTA, GA – Forget any preconceived notions you have about belly dancing. Fierce Fusion turns all that upside down.
Formed last October, Kristin Bishop, along with troupe members Alex and Donna, knew each other from bellydance classes. The three also belong to local fireperformance troupe Pyroteque.
“We found we had a common interest in fire and belly dance and swords as well, so we started playing around with it and decided to start our own troupe,” Bishop said.
With a more modern look, modern music goes along with their routines as well, dancing to music such as Puscifer and Rob Zombie, leaning toward a more industrial sound.
“We do have a lot of gothic undertones and we’re more serious most of the time, but we do like to have fun and kind of play around with different themes and ideas.”
For their one-year anniversary Fierce Fusion, along with 10 other local soloists and groups, hosts a Halloween-themed hasla, a belly-dance party with dancing and music.
“We try to support each other and give each other ways to share our art,” she said.
The choreography for their routine, which theyperformed at the Belly Horror Show in Washington, D.C., is based on the Rob Zombie film “House of 1,000 Corpses.”
“Costuming in this is very untraditional; it’s more of a fusion dance and it’s very narrative and theatrical for this purpose,” Bishop said. But you normally wouldn’t find things like murder and cannibalism in a belly-dancing routine.
“We wanted to step outside the box and do something we’ve never seen before,” she said.
