The message, “Burn Leviticus 18:22 Lies” has been spray-painted across the front doors of the Metropolitan Community Church of Our Redeemer on Greene Street less than a month after the Supreme Court ruled states cannot ban same-sex marriage in this country.
This act of vandalism comes not long after a rainbow flag, symbolizing lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) pride, which was flying outside of the church during Augusta Pride week was ripped down and stolen.
Rev. Rick Sosbe, pastor of the church, and several members of the congregation have been recently featured in various local media outlets discussing gay marriage, including in a Metro Spirit’s cover story last month.
Richmond County’s new LGBT unit has been informed of the crime. Volunteers from the church have begun cleaning and removing the spray paint from the double doors.
