America and her allies around the world have waited far too long to get the attention of the “peace loving” Muslims around the world, and put them on the spot to aggressively pursue and eradicate the radical extremists in their midst.
Way too long.
Before the blood stains had been washed from the streets of Paris, and mere hours after Russian authorities confirmed their tourist filled jetliner en route to Egypt had in fact been brought down by a homemade bomb, French and Russian airstrikes laid waste to targets inside the Syrian city of Raqqa, long held as the self proclaimed “capital of ISIS.”
While U.S. forces played a role, it was clear from the beginning that Russian President Vladimir Putin and French President Francois Hollande are not going to tiptoe around “American sensitivities” with regard as to how clean their strikes turn out, and how many “innocent civilians” are claimed as collateral damage.
Reuters reported Tuesday: “Paris and Moscow are not coordinating their operations, but French President Hollande has called for a global campaign against the radicals in the wake of the Paris attacks.
The Kremlin said Putin spoke to Hollande by telephone and had ordered the Russian navy to establish contact with a French naval force heading to the eastern Mediterranean, led by an aircraft carrier, and to treat them as allies. “We need to work out a plan with them of joint sea and air actions,” Putin told military chiefs.”
Oh, they will be coordinating their attacks soon enough, and not a moment too soon, if the majority of conservative Americans are consulted.
When I first heard of the Monday assault on ISIS training centers and supply buildings in Raqqa, I was shocked to learn that after months of American bombing runs, there were any left standing. But there were.
Apparently, President Obama has been playing by a different set of rules than his Russian and French counterparts. When it comes to getting the attention of the enemy, those guys simply don’t care who they offend. Or who they kill, for that matter.
As Fox News reports: “U.S. rules of engagement and the overarching desire to minimize collateral damage are holding back the true force of U.S. air power, while Paris and Moscow have taken off the gloves following the bombing of a Russian airliner and Friday’s horrific attacks in the French capital, according to one retired four-star general.
“Our air campaign in Syria and Iraq has never been what it should be,” said Gen. Jack Keane, former vice chief of staff of the U.S. Army and a Fox News contributor. “We’ve had incredible restrictions on what we call rules of engagement so, as a result, it takes layers to get approval for a target, it takes too much time, the enemy gets away on us, we’re not really going after the right targets.”
While France and Russia tout their aggressive air campaign, the U.S. has carried out 95 percent of the airstrikes in Syria since the coalition air campaign against Islamic State militants began in August 2014. But the U.S. rules of engagement greatly restrict combat missions, say former military officials, because ISIS immerses its members in civilian populations making them virtual safe havens for terrorist operations.
“I think the French went after a lot of targets that we would not hit and I’m convinced the Russians are doing the same thing,” said Keane, while noting the ISIS targets are not “out in the middle of a desert totally exposed.”
“What ISIS has done — because they know our rules of engagement — every function and critical node they have is tucked in some place with the population,” he told Fox News.
“All that said, we have the capability, with our target planners, to be able to hit that target and not hurt civilians. We have proven it over and over again,” he said. “Too many restrictions. I’m hoping we will remove those restrictions now.”
Looks like Obama has been bringing knives to a gunfight and, even then, has been far too careful about how he used them.
What liberals like President Obama and his leadership team seem to never take into account is that when dealing with the patriarchal cultures that are represented exclusively in radical Islam, lukewarm military responses not only fail to stop the mission, they seem to encourage it.
Radical Islam has only two speeds: Homicidal, aggressive domination and extermination of the enemy or stone cold dead.
In acknowledgment of their terms, we should send a message not just to ISIS, but to the other religious nutballs all over the planet that the Americans have turned over a new leaf in the “war on terror.” Taking a page from Putin, Hollande, and yes, former U.S. President Harry S. Truman, perhaps we should turn Raqqa into the world’s biggest piece of glass. Take a week to evacuate as many civilians as they will allow to leave, and explain that whoever stays behind will soon be meeting their virgins.
ISIS claimed Raqqa as their own, let’s give it right back to them, wrapped up in the world’s biggest fireball.
Fat Man and Little Boy, together again.
If Obama doesn’t have the stones to do it, here’s to hoping the Russian and the Frenchman do. Salut!
