It is being reported that Earth Fare, founded in Asheville in 1975, is coming to Evans. The new location has yet to be officially announced, but local media reports indicate the organic grocer is planning on building in Mullins Crossing shopping center on Washington Road adjacent to Belk’s.
The news coincides with the announcement that the $50 million road widening of Fury’s Ferry Road will be beginning early next year and taking up to five years.
When one considers the fact the current location never seems to have more than ten shoppers at a time, it’s safe to say that the private equity owners of Earth Fare don’t plan on operating the two stores in the same market.
On the surface, the move appears to be a smart one. The current location is a few minutes down the newly extended Riverwatch Parkway from the proposed new site, so current customers will have no trouble getting there.
The proposed footprint for the new location is 40% smaller than the former Winn-Dixie currently housing Earth Fare on Fury’s Ferry Road, from 35,000 down to a much tighter 21,000 square feet.
Although Earth Fare is no Trader Joe’s, a grocer that has long been on the short list of area developers, it is a very earnest, high quality store offering products which are free from added hormones, antibiotics, artificial fats and trans-fats, high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners and preservatives, bleached or bromated flour, and artificial colors and flavors.
On Fury’s Ferry Road, Earth Fare competes with a Publix across the street, same as the proposed new location on Washington Road.
