It was the summer before my senior year in high school. Ronald Reagan was president, Charles DeVaney was mayor and Handsome Harley Drew was still at WBBQ. The airwaves were filled with the sounds of Duran Duran, Van Halen and Bryan Adams. The early summer movies included The Goonies, Brewster’s Millions and sequels of Rambo and James Bond. And on the 4th of July weekend, one of the most iconic and greatest movies of all time was released across America.
While the movie Back To The Future ended up being the highest-grossing film of 1985, that fact is almost a footnote compared to the cultural phenomena it spawned. On its surface, the movie is just a story about a teen that goes back in time to make sure his mom and dad hook up. However, once you add the exploits of an eccentric inventor, an infamous automobile and 1.21 gigawatts, we all begin to see the hero in Marty McFly — a kid of unremarkable circumstance who’s suddenly given the opportunity to save the world.
Well, maybe not the world. But trying to save Doc Brown from the terrorists must count for something, yes?
For those of us who keep track of these things, the date October 21, 2015, possesses special significance in the Back to the Future universe. This is the day that Marty McFly, Doc and Jennifer travel forward in time to prevent Marty Jr. from getting in trouble, a.k.a, the day of the famous hoverboard chase in the town square. This is also the day that Biff steals the time machine and returns to 1955. Oh, and it’s also the day that Marty Jr. gets arrested and Marty Sr. gets fired. On the plus side, though, the Chicago Cubs win the World Series.
BTW — In case someone suggests that October 26 is the date that we should be recognizing, please advise him or her that this is not correct. October 26, 1985, is the day that Marty, Doc and Einstein perform the first time travel at Twin Pines Mall. And that’s, like, so 30 years ago.
As we get closer to this pivotal day in Back to the Future lore, the following trivia questions should help you get into the right state of mind.
What was the exact date and time that lighting struck the Hill Valley clock tower?
At one point in the story, a total of four DeLoreans existed at a single point in time. Specify the date that this occurred, and name the origin of each of the DeLoreans.
True or False: When old Biff returns to 2015 after giving young Biff the Gray’s Sports Almanac, he appears to be struggling as he gets out of the DeLorean. This behavior is due to changes in the timeline that wipe old Biff out of existence.
According to Gray’s Sports Almanac, which college football team has the most national championships? Which Georgia college football team has the most national championships?
When Doc was accidently sent back to 1885, his letter to Marty stated he could not repair the time circuits in the DeLoreon until suitable replacement parts were invented in 1947. If this is the case, how did Doc Brown build a time-travelling locomotive?
Several of us at the office are very excited that October 26, 2015, is almost here. We thought about having everyone bring in his or her best picture from the 1980s. Unfortunately, we realized that half the team wasn’t yet born. We would certainly appreciate it if you could post your best 1980s picture to our Facebook page. We hope that you have fun this month going Back to the Future!
