Surely you’ve heard by now. I supposed it’s entirely possible to have missed it, if you aren’t on Facebook, don’t turn on the TV or have been under a rock. Many of us wanted it and fought for it. We were relentless with signs and stickers and awareness. Anyone with a platform wrote and talked about it. Finally, it happened.
Yep, it’s the name change. I’m in disbelief about it, really. It happened so quickly and easily, after so much difficulty and eventual failure last time.
However it happened, I’m happy. We no longer have a school whose name falls short of its educational stature. I mean, Georgia Regents University was embarrassing, y’all. I hated saying GRU, so I never did. Most everyone I know continued to use ASU and MCG, unless talking to a total newcomer.
Augusta University. We saved the A, and thank goodness.
I’ve heard some complaints about the basic nature of the name, but Boston College doesn’t seem to suffer for it. I guess people will complain no matter what, right?
This comes on the coattails of a little trend that I’ll only partially identify. There’s a pointless and sad Facebook page out there whose main goal is to trash all things Augusta. I’m not telling you the name, because I don’t want it to gain any momentum. Most of the material posted is needless negativity and remains stagnant, but I’d rather you not support or indulge them in any way.
You see, this sort of negativity is the worst kind. They aren’t seeking change. The person behind it is simply trying to convince others that Augusta is terrible. If someone comes along with a positive rebuttal, the response is practically, “You’re stupid. Augusta sucks.”
So here’s my question: what is the actual point of such a thing?
I guess I have a few more questions, too. Just because you don’t like it, why try to convince others? Why try to ruin someone else’s contentedness? If you hate it here so much, why don’t you leave? Did you know there are other cities in the state and even more in the United States? In the world? If you’re stuck here, why don’t you make the most of it? Do you like being unhappy?
I don’t expect answers to my questions. I probably wouldn’t want to hear them. Based on what I’ve already seen, the answers would be pretty nasty. I just like to imagine what’s in other people’s heads.
The dumb negative Facebook page reminds me of when we were all fighting to Save the A. Some of you said, “who cares?” We cared. Actually, a lot of us cared. Why does it matter if we did? If you don’t care, step aside and let the rest of us make Augusta a nice place to live. You seem to put in an awful lot of energy contributing to general unhappiness. Can you imagine if that energy was used to fix everything you hate?
I’ll tell you what. Here’s a pass. If you change your mind, we’ll be here with open arms and a big fat bless your heart. Until then, pour a beer at stay out of the way. Or the A. You’re off the hook. Cheers!
