The Frog and the Hen, open on Flowing Wells Road for a few months now, is pioneering a new approach to the drive thru window in the CSRA. Owner Sean Wight, who opened Frog Hollow in 2009, Farmhaus in 2012 and Craft & Vine in 2014, is excited to roll out the new service to his burgeoning F&H fanbase.
Wight focused on busy families while conceiving the F&H, and a take-out window was an important part of the concept. “We wanted to create something for busy families on the go-an alternative to normal take out food. Quality fresh items-real potatoes, real butter, real fresh green beans that have been blanched, no preservatives, with everything being homemade from scratch,” Wight said.
The drive up window opened last week, with customers either placing their orders on-line or over the phone. In what is a new twist, patrons have the option of getting a bottle of wine or craft beer that will compliment the meal-without leaving their car.
That certainly is a first for the market. Now busy moms ( and dads) ferrying kids from here to there and back again can order a family meal online, swing by the restaurant on the way home and pull in the driveway with a made from scratch family meal along with a nice bottle of wine for the grown-ups. Pretty cool, huh?
The location is right on the cusp of Richmond and Columbia counties. The location is great (Wheeler Road and Mason McKnight Parkway) being centrally located near I-20.
“It’s definitely a busy area,” Wight said. “There are a lot of families passing by here on their way home.”
Wight said the menu is built around single source chickens, with are chilled in a salt and herb brine for six hours, then slow roasted.
“The process enhances the moisture and flavor and the unique ovens Wight sourced feature a design that keeps that moisture level in the oven consistent. “They were pricey, but definitely worth it,” Wight said.
In addition to chicken, the menu features healthy homemade sides with no additives or preservatives, just good quality ingredients.
Artisan family style fresh salads, simple sides, mashed potatoes with butter, salt and heavy cream, seasonal veggies like roasted butternut squash with sorghum glaze and a very popular version of Frog Hollow famous mac and cheese.
”We’ll always have three versions of chicken salad: Southern, California and Curry.” Wight also recommends the smoked gouda and bacon pimento cheese.
Lunch menu features homemade chicken pot pies, artisan sandwiches such as roasted Joyce Farms Chicken, heirloom roasted pork and Border Springs Farms’ leg of lamb, as well as creative salads and daily Blue Plate Specials.
For the month of June, the Frog and the Hen is offering a special perfect for the drive up-a full chicken, two family sized sides, four biscuits and a half gallon of tea for only $30.
The Frog and Hen is open Tuesday through Saturday for lunch and dinner, and features an amazing brunch on Saturday.
